Dual Credit English

Course Description

This dual-credit course introduces high school students to college-level reading, analytical writing, and critical thinking, while fulfilling 9th-grade high school English requirements. Equivalent to an introductory college composition course (often corresponding to College Rhetoric I / ENGL 1301), the curriculum focuses on the writing process, rhetorical analysis, and argument construction. Students evaluate diverse literary and informational texts—including essays, speeches, and contemporary literature—analyzing how authors use audience adaptation, evidence, structure, and style to achieve their purpose. Through frequent writing assignments, peer reviews, and revision, students master thesis development, source integration, MLA citation, and formal academic voice to prepare for college-level research and discourse. Upon successful completion, students earn both 9th-grade High School English I credit and transferable college composition credit.
