Course Description

This dual-credit course provides an intensive exploration of early American literature alongside advanced college-level rhetoric, research, and composition. Mirroring a first-year college composition and introductory literature sequence (typically corresponding to College Rhetoric I / ENGL 1301), the course analyzes how foundational American texts—from indigenous oral traditions and colonial narratives through early 20th-century movements—reflected and shaped the nation’s identity, values, and democratic ideals. Students engage in rigorous rhetorical analysis, studying how authors construct arguments using logical structure, evidence, tone, and persuasive devices. Through extensive synthesis essays, academic research papers, and collaborative discussions, students refine their ability to build well-supported, evidence-based arguments while mastering formal academic voice and MLA formatting. Upon successful completion, students earn required 11th-grade High School English III credit and transferable college composition credit.
